Enclosed vessels can range from the practical salad bowl with an in-curved rim that helps to corral its contents, to the purely decorative and mysterious vessel with a tiny opening. The enclosed vessel always seems a bit mysterious, and the viewer can wonder if its contents are really meant to be seen…

You’ll notice a distinctly Southwestern influence in some of these examples. That’s my archeology background creeping in again in the form of a love for the pottery of the Desert Southwest cultures. They knew what they were doing.
